Top Tips on How to Remove Stains from Carpets

spilled coffee on carpet

No matter how careful you are, keeping a carpet in pristine condition can be quite challenging, especially in a busy family household. From spilt coffee and red wine to accident-prone children and pets, carpet stains are a part of life for most of us.

So, what can you do to minimise the damage when the inevitable happens?

Our cleaning experts have put together some top tips on how to remove stains from the carpet so that you’re prepared to act fast when disaster strikes.

The 3-Step Approach

Carpet stains will need different treatment depending on their cause. However, three basic steps can help in most situations:

Step One — Remove the Excess as Fast as Possible

This can help to limit the damage and prevent a permanent stain from developing. If the spillage is solid, use a hard, non-abrasive implement such as a spoon. For liquids, blot with an absorbent cloth from the outside edge inwards. Avoid rubbing or any vigorous movements, as this can damage the carpet.

Step Two — Use a Stain Remover

You can make a basic carpet cleaning solution from household products such as vinegar, baking soda and water. Alternatively, there are lots of commercial products available. Check out our blog on eco-friendly home cleaning products for tips on choosing a product that is free from chemicals and toxins. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid damaging the carpet.

Step Three — Blot and Leave to Dry

Repeat the blotting action from step one, working from the outside with a clean cloth. Place a stack of paper towels on top of the wet patch and place a heavy item, such as a cooking pot, on top. Leave overnight. This will help to dry out the carpet as the towels will absorb any excess moisture.

Common Carpet Stains and How to Remove Them

There are some spillages we dread — red wine on a cream carpet, coffee on a brand new rug — these most common accidents can result in the most stubborn stains. But if you act fast, the damage can be limited or even eliminated.

  • Red Wine Stains — blot to remove the excess, then cover with tonic water. Do not drench the stain. Leave for a few minutes, then blot away the water and spray with a mixture of vinegar and water. Blot again and sprinkle with baking soda. Leave for around an hour and then vacuum.
  • Coffee Stains — wet the stain with a little warm water. Blot with a cloth, working from the outside of the stain inwards. Continue until the cloth comes away clean.
  • Blood Stains — remove any excess blood with paper towels. Apply a little cold water — warm or hot water could set the stain. Blot with a damp cloth to absorb as much of the stain as possible. Spray liberally with a solution of washing-up liquid and cold water. Blot again. Repeat this process until all the blood is gone.
  • Pet Stains — remove as much of the mess as possible, but don’t scrub! Spray with a mixture of water and washing-up liquid, then blot and dry with paper towels. Spray again, this time with a solution of white vinegar and water to help neutralise the odour. Cover the damaged area lightly with baking soda, leave for five to 10 minutes, then vacuum. Repeat if necessary.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list. In many cases, following the general three-step guidance will do wonders to prevent long-term damage. In some cases, you may need to seek professional help to remove stains without damaging the carpet, but taking the right action when the spillage occurs will help your cleaner achieve the best results.

Carpet Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

We’ve all done it — spill something sinister on a beautiful carpet, panic and start vigorously scrubbing away in the hopes of removing all evidence of the accident. But this can make the stain worse, increase the risk of the mark becoming permanent and damage the carpet.

If the worst happens, try to stay calm and remember the basic three-step process — remove the excess, use a stain remover and blot dry. Avoid these common carpet cleaning mistakes:

  • Scrubbing at the Stain — this will embed the stain in the carpet fibres making it more likely to become permanent. There is also a risk of damaging the material of the carpet, making it appear worn.
  • Using a Stain Remover Incorrectly — there are many different stain removal products on the market. Be sure to check the label and make sure the product you use is suitable for the type of stain and carpet. And don’t forget to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Using the wrong product or applying it incorrectly can make a stain worse or damage the fibres of your carpet.
  • Applying Too Much Water — a little cold water can work wonders on a stain if applied correctly. However, it can be tempting to drench a bad stain in water, which will spread the mark and damage the adhesive that keeps your carpet in place. When treating carpet stains, a little water goes a long way!
  • Treating the Stain Too Late — the best way to remove stains is to act fast. But of course, you might not always be there when the spillage occurs. If a stain is left too long without being treated, it can become permanent, and you will need a professional carpet cleaning service to remove it without damaging the carpet.

When to Seek Help from a Professional Carpet Cleaner

If you have tried and failed to treat a stain or you have discovered a stain that has become permanent, it’s time to call a professional carpet cleaner for help. Repeated attempts to remove a stain embedded deep into the carpet fibres is likely to make its appearance worse and cause irreparable damage to your carpet.

It’s also advisable to contact a professional cleaner if a stain appears on a particularly delicate or valuable carpet. An experienced cleaner will have the skills, knowledge and advanced equipment to treat the stain while protecting your precious carpet.
